Only time will tell if New Zealand can continue to farm as many animals as we do now.
Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment Simon Upton says current methane levels could have a devastating impact on our environment.
He says stock numbers will need to reduce by 22 percent by 2050, to prevent additional global warming.
Agriculture Greenhouse Gas Research Centre director Harry Clark told Mike Hosking New Zealand will need to reduce livestock, or find a way to stop the emissions being produced.
"New technologies are in the pipeline, which could reduce the amount of methane each animal produces."
