Conversations with my Conservative Dead Father

Has America Gone Mad?

Listen Later

Hello and welcome to episode five of Conversations with my Conservative Dead Father. This podcast comes from direct transcriptions of the email exchanges my father and I had the year before he died. My father was a smart educated guy who happened to also be a conservative. As you might guess, I’m a liberal. These discussions create a forum I know he would proud to be a part of - even if there’s a dangling participle in that sentence. Sorry Pops!

We never tried to convince each other. Our objective was to learn and listen. It was a great gift to be able to hear the other side from someone who I very much respected, even if I totally disagreed with the conclusions.

So let’s get started.

  • The show discusses the feelings of confusion and disbelief experienced by many right-wing Americans, as articulated in a letter by conservative radio talk show host Joyce Kaufman.
  • The letter expresses the feeling of living in a topsy-turvy world where right is perceived as wrong and vice versa, comparing it to the Twilight Zone or "the upside down."
  • The host, JG, and his co-host, Pops, engage in a back-and-forth dialogue, breaking down and reacting to each point made in the letter.
  • JG surprises himself by agreeing with some of the right-wing perspectives, leading Pops to suggest that JG might be more of a libertarian than a liberal.
  • They discuss multiple societal issues including LGBTQ+ rights, abortion, immigration, racism, justice system, and social historical accountability, providing both conservative and liberal perspectives.
  • The discourse also touches upon irony and paradoxes in American politics, such as the tension between free speech and political correctness, prioritization of different issues by different groups, and the contradiction between what the government says versus what it does.
  • Pops and JG agree that while they have differing viewpoints on many issues, the root of the problem lies in the loss of trust and respect for differing opinions and the need for more nuance in society.
  • The dialogue illustrates that despite the ideological divide, there is room for understanding, acknowledging, and even agreeing with points from the 'other side'.
  • They emphasize the importance of open-mindedness, respectful discourse, and the need to prioritize issues based on personal experiences and societal impact.
  • The conversation concludes with Pops praising JG's articulation of the points and the mutual understanding that the country's current state reflects a loss of trust in public discourse and the need for more tolerance and understanding.
