As we examine the text, we see that the disciples took their clothes and spread them on the back of the donkey, cushioning it for Jesus to ride on. They even spread their clothes on the road for the donkey to walk on. The people also had palm trees in their hands and shouted out loud when they saw Jesus coming down from the Mount of Olives.

But why were they shouting? The scripture tells us that they were rejoicing because of the mighty works Jesus had done. They were praising God for all the miracles they had personally witnessed or experienced in their own lives. We can imagine Lazarus, whom Jesus had raised from the dead, shouting to the top of his voice. Mary and Martha may have also been shouting as they remembered the miracle that Jesus had performed for their brother.

As we read further, we see how the Holy Spirit worked within the people, inspiring them to give glory to God for what he had done. We can imagine the woman at the well, the man at the pool of Bethsaida, and the woman with the issue of blood all shouting and giving thanks for the miracles Jesus had done for them.
