In honor of pride month, we are taking a look at the 1993 case of Brandon Teena.

Brandon Teena was a transgender man born and raised in Nebraska to mother JoAnn Brandon. At birth, Brandon was female and given the name Teena Ranae Brandon. However, Brandon was always very tomboyish in nature and in appearance and carried himself as such.

Brandon and his sister Tammy were raised mostly by their single mother, JoAnn Brandon as their father died in an accident just before Brandon's birth. JoAnn remarried for a short time but that ended in divorce. During their childhood, both Brandon and his sister Tammy were victims of sexual abuse by a male member of their family.

During school, Brandon began to identify as male and rejected his given name Teena Brandon- introducing himself as Billy, and later Brandon Teena. Brandon was charming and attractive. He went out with a number of girls and enjoyed sports like basketball, football, and fitness such as weight lifting. 

After leaving school, Brandon moved to a new town, formed a new circle of friends including drinking buddies in John Lotter and Marvin Thomas Nissen. It was at this time Brandon began dating Lana Tisdale.

Around the holidays of 1993, Brandon was violently abducted, sexually assaulted and a few days later, murdered.
