Have Faith and Do Not Doubt

David W Palmer

(Matthew 21:20–21 NKJV) And when the disciples saw it, they marveled, saying, “How did the fig tree wither away so soon?” (21) So Jesus answered and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but also if you say to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ it will be done.”

Jesus spoke to a fig tree and said, “Let no fruit grow on you ever again” (Mat. 21:19 NKJV). With that short statement, the Master achieved his purpose. We know this because the next phrase of Mat. 21:19 says, “Immediately the fig tree withered away” (NKJV). Without discussing why the creator of the universe would kill a tree, we see that he used very few words to produce the outcome he wanted. Jesus truly is the Master when it comes to mountain-moving faith.

Imagine what our life would be like if we could somehow emulate Jesus’s ability to do this. We could save time, effort, and words; and we could produce absolutely amazing and rapid results in many areas. For example, we could say the following short statements, move on to the next area, and have “immediate” results following:

  • “Sickness, be gone!”
  • “Storm, peace! Be still!”
  • “Fish, come here now!”
  • “Bread, multiply!”
  • “Car, start, be reliable, keep running, and don’t crash!”
  • “Youth, be renewed!”
  • “Doors, open!”
  • “Body, be strong!”
  • “Demons, leave now!”
  • “Little [dead] girl, I say to you, arise!”

  • Life could be like heaven on earth if we could simply declare what we would like to see, and then have it happen—without all the sweaty toil we normally have to put into it. Having money obey us, obstacles move at our command, and signs following us would be amazing. If only … but wait! Didn’t Jesus say …

“He who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.” (John 14:12 NKJV)

“If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” (Mark 9:23 NKJV)

“If you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matthew 17:20 NKJV)

“According to your faith be it unto you.” (Matthew 9:29 KJV)

Yes, Jesus said that we really can do what he did; we can speak short crisp statements of faith and have them come to pass. His only condition on this is that we believe, do not doubt, and say them in his name.
