This episode was inspired by my desire to share the poetry of Walt Whitman with all of you. His work has been an enormous inspiration to me and I sometimes feel almost cosmically connected to him. The way he describes his experience of being a nomadic, citizen of the world speaks to my soul! Anyway, here I was, recording myself reading aloud from Leaves of Grass and I kept coming across these phrases and words that sounded racist to me. And I felt so many things - like "Can I share this on my podcast?" "How can I appreciate his work and the growth it has offered to me throughout my life if he was a freaking racist?" "Can we separate the teachers from their teachings?" And more. What ensued was me sitting on it for a few days and then recording all of this podcast at once wth very little editing. I hope it is interesting to you. Let me know what it brings up! And decolonize your mind! And don't be afraid to question everything.
