There was only one safe way into the sheep pen in the middle east as well: through the gate, or door. As we begin our new series titled, “He Is”, we are going to see that Jesus likened himself unto several things in the gospel the John. The first of these comparisons is the gate, or door. We live in a society that tries to tell us that there are many doors we can go through if we even believe in doors at all. Jesus, however, tells us that there is only one door – and it is he!

The setting for this passage is what is known as “the good shepherd discourse” and it is in this passage that we’ll see the first of two images tonight. Here Jesus is using a figure of speech to call followers to himself as a hostile time in his ministry. The Pharisees wanted him dead, and he used this imagery to communicate safety and security with one who is the true shepherd. More about that next week. We are going to consider from the text 3 ways that Jesus was not only the door for Jewish people in the Old Testament but is also the door for us today.
