Light is vital for life. Especially when you are trying to find your way to the bathroom in the dark. It gives us the ability to see things that we would otherwise miss and avoid hitting otherwise painful things. It brings clarity to our surroundings and gives us the confidence to walk in security. Light is also the final image for Christ that we will consider from Scripture. We have seen that he is Door, the Good Shepherd, the Resurrection and the Life, the Way, the Truth, and the Life, the True Vine, the Bread of Life, and now we will see him refer to himself as, the Light of the World.

Referred to as the “light of the world discourse”, Jesus continues his public teaching ministry around the Temple, during the Feast of Tabernacles, a time known for lighting giant lamps to signify God leading His people in the wilderness by smoke and the light of fire. It is here he proclaims himself to be “the light” and in this passage we will see what he means by that as well as 2 ways that he is the light of the world for us.
