Lighting is important. In photography, for example, lighting can be the difference between a breathtaking photo and a terrible one. In the context of a human being, a life is only as beautiful as the light that illuminates it. In the Sermon on the Mount, in addition to Jesus calling believers to be the salt of the earth, He also commands believers to light their shine in the world. As followers of Christ, we are called to be the light in a dark world. Jesus is the Light of the World, and He changes everything. Light always changes the environment it’s in because it exposes the darkness. Because we are an extension of Jesus’ ministry as followers of Him, our responsibility is to be the light in the darkness. Our responsibility is to let His light shine through us, but the reality is that there is sin in us that affects the brightness of the light that shines through us. As the light shines through us, it is going to expose the very things that dim the light that shines through us and around us. Our conviction of our sin must lead to confession because sin can dim the brightness of how the light shines in our life. The light in us never changes because Jesus never changes, but the sin in our lives can affect the brightness of the light shining through us. Let your light shine in the darkness, and let it shine bright. Listen to this sermon about how He Is Light and how we are to let the light shine in the ninth part of our He Is series.
