Today... the first in our special Christmas series- our verse: Micah 5:2 “..you, Bethlehem, are a small village. Yet a ruler of Israel will come from you, one from the distant past.

Christmas is a time of celebration around the world. We think of it as a time to give and get gifts. Actually it is much more than that. It's the birthday celebration of the greatest person ever born. No other human being has affected our world as much as Jesus Christ. He has brought hope and forgiveness to countless people in every corner of the planet. He is a living person and...He has the power of an endless life. Let's recount how it all began 2,020 years ago.

In a sleepy village, a young woman and her husband awaited the birth of their child. Angels appeared to them and explained that this Child was special. The seed for this child did not come from the husband, but directly from God. The birth would take place in a tiny town named Bethlehem. It is located in the hills not far from Jerusalem.

Scholars and historians today agree that Jesus was a real live person. His birth was foretold over 600 years before He arrived. This is why our verse above calls him “one from the distant past.” Here is the prophecy written around 600BC:

“A child is born, a son is given to us.

The government will rest on His shoulders.

And He will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

His government and its peace will never end.” Isaiah 9:6
