Head Coverings and Worship (part 1)

1 Corinthians 11:1–16 is the often‑controversial "head‑coverings" passage, but understanding it requires seeing verse 3 as the hinge. Paul's "head" language is about role relationships, not rankings of worth: God is the head of Christ, Christ the head of man, and man the head of woman. From that theological foundation Paul builds the rest of his case in verses 1–10, calling believers to imitate Christ, showing how role and honor become visible in worship, and grounding the practice in creation, nature, angelic witness, and apostolic practice. The head covering in Corinth was a culturally-based symbol that illustrated a timeless principle: worship should visibly reflect God's ordered wisdom. Equality of essence and difference of role coexist — just as the Son submits to the Father in role without losing deity, a woman's submission in role does not diminish her equal dignity as an image‑bearer of God. And when Paul reminds us that the angels are watching, he's underscoring that worship is a cosmic event, not just a local gathering.
