If you go for the faster version of the head skip and you miss it, you'll get stuck with the "Use" verb selected. In the floppy disks version, you either have to press "Walk to" (either by clicking on the verb or using a hotkey for it) or use the skull so you finish the action. Then you can walk to the side of the cliff.
