Head Start programs begin to close as government shutdown disrupts funding

Due to the ongoing 2025 government shutdown, many Head Start programs across the U.S. have begun closing their doors after missing federal funding payments. By November 5, Head Start sites in 18 states and Puerto Rico had closed, leaving roughly 10,000 children and families without care, early education, and nutrition. The shutdown has also forced many programs that remain open to cut services, reduce hours, or take out loans to cover expenses.
