The book of Ezra tells the story of Israel's return to Jerusalem at the end of their captivity in Babylon. Allowed to return home by the decree of the Persian king, Cyrus, the exiles set out to restore their religious identity by rebuilding the temple. But the opposition they encountered, from without and within, was a demonstration of the fact that the journey home would be longer than they had anticipated.
