My name is Denae Phipps and I am in my 9th year as a Newcomer EL (English Learners) teacher working with students who are new to the country at a low-income High School. I recently celebrated my 10 year anniversary with my husband, Tyler, and we have a very active toddler who always keeps us on our toes.
We were foster parents for 6 years and had 13 placements before switching to an adoptive home and changing gears a little bit. Being a teacher to students with traumatic backgrounds and caring for children in foster care encouraged me to pursue a master’s degree in Trauma-Informed Education so that I could better serve my students and my community.
Being a teacher is so much more than a single subject, it’s building relationships, providing safe spaces, and encouraging progress every step of the way.
