Life in Lebanon during the 1970s and 1980s was defined by the country’s long-running civil war. For Beirut artist Zena el Khalil, the scars of the past define her artistic practice, a life-long search for healing and understanding. In a new multimedia show in Beit Beirut, a former war-torn apartment block on the former dividing Green Line, Zena addresses the building, the city and the country’s bloody past through a diverse presentation of painting, video, photography and performance. In this podcast, we meet Zena in Beirut for an in-depth discussion about the show, the city and how she seeks emotional and spiritual resolution in the ruins of the city.
