We rely on our eyes to see and process the world around us, however sometimes there are barriers to access for people dealing with eye disorders. Our eyes are vulnerable to many different ailments, which may affect our vision and impair the way we live. There are different conditions that affect eye health, including refractive errors (needing spectacles), cataracts (clouding of the natural lens in the eye), glaucoma (raised pressure in the eye), macular degeneration (often age-related changes to the central part of the retina) and diabetes. We’re discussing eye disorders, general eye health and how to know when it’s time for your eyes to be checked by a medical practitioner. We also have this conversation during international Glaucoma Awareness Week. Glaucoma is a disease that damages the eye’s optic nerve as a result of a build-up of pressure on the eye. It is one of the top three causes of blindness in South Africa.
