An in-depth talk about Functional Medicine via the foundations of health, the language of the body and the intersections of humanity in the greater whole. This episode looks at the physical, metabolic and metaphoric causes of dis-ease and how we are being asked to return our bodies and our lives to inner and outer balance.
KEY MOMENTS
“For the modern body, in spite of the great diversity of different disease manifestations, there are common roots causes and key processes. There is a meta-language for that which really speaks to our current situation – disconnection and conflict.”
“In relation to the human body, it is about returning to a sort of balance. And that balance speaks through the imbalance of dis-ease. So you can find your way back knowing how you’ve strayed and where the path has taken you. And for me that is a learning path. So it’s not about short cuts; it’s about feeling and understanding and finding a way home.”
“My approach is to understand the dis-ease process because that will tell me what needs to be rebalanced. It’s a language. It’s the language of the body. Dis-ease is the body speaking.”
“I really question the dogma that issues from these pronouncements about what a healthy diet looks like, especially when you look behind at who is invested in that particular dogma.”
“There’s so much around addiction in our relationship with food. I think that’s a big one to begin to look at and clear out because the compulsion from addiction can override. So you need to have a flavour for what you’re being pulled to for addiction and comfort and what is the body speaking that it needs nutritionally.”
“What is the discomfort? What is the despair? What’s the pain? What’s the sense of lack? There’s a beautiful opportunity to actually sit. Something is speaking and is wanting to be heard.”
“All I have is a bit of a map. That map I can share with another. And it is absolutely working in collaboration with somebody. It feels like you’re working with somebody and there is a body there.”

ABOUT THE GUEST
Nicole Freris, MBBChir, MRCP, MRCGP, trained in medicine at Cambridge. After completing her general practitioner (GP) training in London, she worked for 10 years as a doctor and health educator in the Brasilian Amazon. In the latter half of this period, she was a freelance researcher for Greenpeace and trained in Permaculture. On returning to the UK, she taught Permaculture Design and took a degree in Medical Herbalism at the Middlesex University. She has since developed and taught a core curriculum in “Restorative Medicine” as part of a professional herbal medicine qualification at Heartwood Education. She continues to work as a GP in London.
Since her early years, she has been fascinated with the unfathomable and intricate complexity of the human frame and physiology, and the greater ecology we are part of. She is painfully aware of the epidemic of chronic diseases afflicting the modern body and has sought to understand and unravel the root causes and key processes that lead to imbalance and dis-ease. This exploration of the human terrain has been enabled by insights from science, as well as knowledge passed down from our forebearers and traditional peoples who sustain a balanced and nourishing relationship with the earth. It is her hope that this understanding might be a map, to help navigate our bodies and beings into a place of harmony and health.
