Healthy Earth, Healthy Birth: Mother Earth Needs an OB-GYN
In this Earth Day episode of Green Docs, the guys lead with breaking news – a State Supreme Court election in Wisconsin with national implications, as highlighted by Dr. Kristin Lyerly in Episode 2. They follow with reports of traveling tornadoes and a pro athlete who scored zero points during his wife's delivery, and then move to the main event: Earth Day #53 and their interview with Dr. Jeanne Conry.
After covering the history of the first Earth Day in 1970- and the tumultuous decade that preceded it- Bruce and Nate explain how that simple protest changed the world. To this, they add the little-known backstory of dangers from mercury in fish, a startling tale from mid-century Japan that awakened that country to environmental risk.
Dr. Conry, who has led both the United States and International OBGyn societies, joins in to share what motivates her as she continues her amazing career promoting healthy pregnancy outcomes and better health care for all the women of the world. The guys close with a hopeful reminder from that first Earth Day of our proven capacity to solve big environmental challenges, and offer specific suggestions for how to protect ourselves and help our communities.
