Highlight - Proverbs 24 New Living Translation
…17 Don’t rejoice when your enemies fall; don’t be happy when they stumble.18 For the Lord will be displeased with you and will turn his anger away from them.
Explain – I was struck with this verse, it is very curious to me. Don’t rejoice when your enemies fall? I think of World War II, the Evil Axis forces falling and the world rejoicing. I think of Osama Bin Laden, the organizer of the 9-11 attacks, falling and the world rejoicing. I think of two football rivals, and one losing and the others gloating.
Proverbs tells us that God is not pleased with these actions.
Apply – I struggle trying to understand this reasoning, this seems so unnatural to me. How can we possibly not cheer when someone that has oppressed us falls? I am reminded that we are to not trust our own understanding:
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.6 Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.
43 “You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’[q] and hate your enemy. 44 But I say, love your enemies![r] Pray for those who persecute you!
Matthew 5 NLT
Respond – I must trust in You with all my heart, lean not to my own understanding, acknowledge You in everything I think, say, and do so that You can impart Your knowledge, Your Wisdom, Your Understanding, and Your Instruction.
