1The sayings of King Lemuel contain this message,[a] which his mother taught him
…4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, to guzzle wine. Rulers should not crave alcohol.
5 For if they drink, they may forget the law and not give justice to the oppressed.
6 Alcohol is for the dying, and wine for those in bitter distress.
7 Let them drink to forget their poverty and remember their troubles no more.
Explain – King Lemuel’s proverb cautions about the danger of alcohol, which will distract from duties and responsibilities. This says that alcohol is for the dying and for those in bitter distress, in other words for medicinal purposes.
Apply – The application for me is clear. I trust in the Lord with all my heart, I do not yield to my own understanding, if He guides me to drink alcohol, I will, if He leads me to abstain – I will abstain. I will not try to rationalize if this is right or wrong, nor challenge anyone else, I will trust in the Lord alone.
Respond – Lord, thank You for providing knowledge, wisdom, understanding and instruction through the indwelling Holy Spirit. I strive to honor You with my life, to obediently follow You in all I think, say and do, to be all that I can be in You.
