Jeremiah - "Heart Issues (Part 2)"
"We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ."
Colossians 1:28 (NIV84)

Lesson Text:

12A glorious throne set on high from the beginning is the place of our sanctuary. 13O Lord, the hope of Israel, all who forsake you shall be put to shame; those who turn away from you shall be written in the earth, for they have forsaken the Lord, the fountain of living water. 14Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved, for you are my praise. 15Behold, they say to me, "Where is the word of the Lord? Let it come!" 16I have not run away from being your shepherd, nor have I desired the day of sickness. You know what came out of my lips; it was before your face. 17Be not a terror to me; you are my refuge in the day of disaster. 18Let those be put to shame who persecute me, but let me not be put to shame; let them be dismayed, but let me not be dismayed; bring upon them the day of disaster; destroy them with double destruction!
Jeremiah 17:12–18 (ESV)

Review of last week's message (17:1-10):

1. When the Bible speaks of the heart it's only referring to emotions. (T or F)
2. People make bad choices, but everyone is good at heart. (T or F)
3. Only God can understand the heart. (T or F)

9The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? 10"I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds."

Jeremiah 17:9–10 (ESV)

Applying the 'heart truths' of 17:9-10 to life:

1. Because the heart is desperately sick and cannot be understood, you can't put ANYTHING PAST PEOPLE.
2. Because the heart is deceitful above all things, you can't allow POPULAR OPINION to shape your  CHOICES.

19We know that we are children of God and that the world around us is under the control of the evil one.

1 John 5:19 (NLT)

19If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

John 15:19 (ESV)

3. Because no one but God understands the heart, you can't  TAKE MATTERS into your own HANDS.

When you became a Christian God gave you a new heart. GUARD YOUR HEART!

23Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.

Proverbs 4:23 (NIV)
