I have read some of the extremely detailed comments from some people. I like the writing of Conrad and Heart of darkness is no exception. To me some people read too much into what Conrad wrote. To me he simply wanted to critisize the grossly inefficiant and incompetent Belgian colonisation of the Congo. The inefficiency is highlighted by the 3 month wait for rivets to repair the steamer. The station managers of the "company" are grotesque and stupid. Kurtz has gone "local" and the reference to the feathered women parading up and down, indicates that Kurtz is lost to Western society. I read the book several times and love the atmosphere Conrad describes. A classic too is the decription of how the Romans found England going up the Thames (In the beginning of the book).

This is the best edition of the best novella-length story ever written -- an absolute masterpiece, and the accompanying background and critical materials in the Norton edition are invaluable. (Tip: Don't skip Conrad's letter in which he describes his "method" of writing!) This is a difficult, complex story that, if you read far enough into it, will grab you and will not let go until the very last sentence. A work of genius on multiple levels! If you haven't read it, read it now! If you have read it, read the historical and analytical materials in this edition and then read it again!
Powerful prose
Marlow, a reflective and thoughtful seaman , relates a tale of his travel up the Congo river to a small group of men. Darkness is theme, darkness in men's hearts as they enclaves native people in theme quest for riches. Darkness of the jungle, the fog, the natives , the river and the conquest of land, people and resources.
Thud short story is beautifully written. The development of each character is so precise that one feels they personally know each participant in this powerful drama. This story will remain a classic.
Strange book, not exciting, but strange enough to get you to finish it.
This is a strange book, but it kind of keeps you reading. My son had to read thismin college and I remember he wrote a really good paper on it. I read it then too. It is very strange but keeps you with it, maybe because it is so strange. Not all that exciting, but strange
Not the apocalypse I expected
Not exactly something I would read again, but certainly not as bad as I was expecting. I was told over and over how wordy and difficult it is. While it is wordy, I've read much worse!
Though some cry racism, I tend to disagree. Conrad was a man of his time and was subject to racist slurs himself. Look at the value this story has in all ways, not just take offence to certain remarks.
Then watch Apocalypse Now (and tell me how it was, I was too chicken!)
Read it for a university class.
