Listen Later

It is far easier to have a goal than to actually take the action to reach them. Even more, knowing what kind of action to take is equally difficult. Dr. Amber Robins inspires us to reach out to an encourager, someone who will be there to support us to take action steps that will lead us to reaching our goals and visions in life. As a coach, she shares the value of being an encourager herself and how it can be hard for people to find this kind of support. Amber puts herself out there through media to extend her help, become more visible, and to empower more people.

How The Encourager Can Help You Reach Your Goals with Dr. Amber Robins
I'm here with my special guest, Dr. Amber Robins. She is a family medicine resident physician at the University of Rochester. She’s a personal wellness and a media coach. She's also an international bestselling author of The Write Prescription. What her hope and what her personal vision is to help motivate others to achieve their best. Truly, she is a Heartrepreneur. Welcome to the show, Dr. Amber.

Thank you for having me. I'm excited to be here.

It's such an interesting combination. You're in medicine at the same time you were interested in personal wellness and media. How does all that come to be?

There are several passions of mine. In regards to being a doctor, I got led into that because my dad got diagnosed with a spinal cord injury early on when I was younger. I’ve seen medicine all my life and I've also seen the importance of being well and making sure that you're taken care of, especially in medicine. A lot of doctors, and people in general, get burned out. I see the importance of that. Then the media portion brings everything together because I see patients come in the clinic, but a lot of the patients who I'm trying to reach aren't necessarily coming into the clinic. Having the outlet of media and getting to people and giving them good information on how to live their lives in a healthier way, that's important to me too. Media gives me that outlet.

That works together. It’s always interesting and I love to hear how people combine with what they’re interested in and why they got interested. The title of the book is awesome, The Write Prescription. How did that come to be? What's included in the book? I've got lots of folks that own businesses that need to write, want to write, some are writing books and some have books. I'd love to hear what that's all about for you.

If you call a doctor or whatever they say, “Can you put the right prescription?” That's a catchy thing that a doctor is also known for. The fact that I love writing, I love journaling and I encouraged patients, family members, friends and everyone to write things down, that's a way to come up with a goal and meet the goal. The book itself goes through my first year of medical school. The reason why I did it that way is I wanted people to know that it doesn't matter if it’s in medical school, in life or whatever, everyone has a struggle. The way the book is set up is it starts off when I was first starting and then it ends when I end the first year. Within it are places where the reader can write down what is going on in their life.

They have different questions about what your goals are and what you do when you're in a place of being scared or being discouraged. In addition, there are scriptures. Those are the ways that I got through that year and I continue to get through hard times in my life. I felt that it's always helpful. I know it’s helpful to me to have someone there to hold my hand. In my instance, it’s been my family and my friends,
