Heat Dome Danger: Surviving the Scorching Central and Eastern US

Listen Later

If you or someone you know is affected by the heatwave, it's important to know that cooling centers are managed at the state and local level.

Here are the most effective ways to find a cooling center near you:

*Dial 2-1-1: This service can connect you with local resources, including the locations of cooling centers activated during extreme heat.

*Contact Local Authorities: Your local health department or emergency management office will have the most up-to-date information. Many large cities also operate a 311 information line that provides cooling center details during heat emergencies.

*Check Official City or County Websites: Municipalities often post interactive maps and lists of cooling centers online when a heat advisory is in effect. For example, New York City provides a "Cooling Center Finder", and Philadelphia activates a list of sites during a "Heat Health Emergency".

As a starting point, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends a resource page from the National Center for Healthy Housing, which compiles links to many of these state and local resources: https://nchh.org/information-and-evidence/learn-about-healthy-housing/emergencies/extreme-heat/cooling-centers-by-state/

It is always a good idea to call a location ahead of time to confirm its hours of operation.
