Real Women

Heather Fisher "Fish" | Body Image. Femininity. Gender Fluidity - Why aren't we there yet? - Work Hard, Be Brave, Believe in Yourself... What Happens After Retiring From Sport

Listen Later

Today Tracy and Dawn are joined by an Olympian, International Rugby player representing England and Great Britain, Heather Fisher (AKA Fish) is on Real Women. She’s on the show today to talk all about femininity, body image and gender fluidity. We’re also going to be covering the topics of working hard, being brave, believing in yourself, and what happens when you retire from sport.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Just because you’re a female it doesn't mean you can’t train your body the way traditionally a male would and it doesn't mean that your femininity is in some way compromised.
  • We’re now seeing more and more women coming into environments which have traditionally been seen as masculine ones such as rugby and football. This is showing younger people that being male or female doesn't define the sports or passions you can pursue.
  • Fish feels like she has probably lost out on sponsorship or brand deals because she isn’t what people might want looks wise from a female athlete.
  • When Fish lost her hair she felt like she lost a massive part of her personality, it was really tough for her. It also changed how she noticed people were perceiving her.
  • Instead of thinking I’m going to do this”, you should change that to “I’m doing this” because that gives you the motivation to actually get up and do it.

BEST MOMENTS
‘As an athlete, judge me on my performance, nothing else’
‘I don’t feel the need for the conversation, I’ll just do it’
‘Why can’t we just be curious and inquisitive’

ABOUT THE GUEST

Heather Fisher (AKA Fish) is an Olympian, International Rugby player, representing England and Great Britain.

From a difficult beginning with anorexia, going on to achieve many goals, representing her country in two sports at international level has not been not easy. She is also strikingly recognised now with alopecia. Her take on body image is fascinating, complex, and inspiring. Her message to others is “Be brave enough to be yourself and courageous enough to use it and work with people in your way so that you win and they win! We all have the capability to leave a legacy so trust yourself, trust where you are and trust you’ve got this!” Her powerful mantra is simple: Be brave, be bold, be you.

ABOUT THE HOSTS
Dawn and Tracy are real women who are fed up with all the “noise” out there in the real world. Life isn’t simply rainbows and unicorns, it's broken relationships, hard work, hot sweats and never ending laundry baskets.  But life as a real woman is also about being honest, having good gossip and speaking our truths. Whether it’s peeling yourself into your spandex for a night out, or running a business meeting barefoot because the heel has fallen off your stilettos, there is always something to laugh about in life.

Dawn is mid 50’s mid menopause straight talking business maverick.  Four kids, three grandchildren, two businesses, one husband and a self proclaimed “hottie”.

Tracy is a mid 50’s awesome mum, business and property mentor. Proud of her raw, honest nature, “bonkers” sense of humour and good old fashioned northern humility.
