As we have been thinking about hope, it is time to consider that hope is not an eternal virtue. It has a shelf life. It is something that has no place in eternity for we will have all of our hopes fulfilled in Christ. However, it also is one of the most important things to possess in this life- this dichotomy is stunning when you consider it- Heaven, the place of our hopes, is itself, hopeless- This means that we must both hold on to our hope against that day, but also that we must not allow our hope itself to become that which we desire above its object. This truth keeps us grounded and allows our hope to have power to transform without becoming empty and vapid.
