Heaven Meets Earth Week 3 / Expect the Unexpected

Listen Later

What does it truly mean to wish someone a 'Merry Christmas'? This exploration of Luke chapter 2 challenges us to embrace the unexpected nature of God's work in our lives. We discover three powerful truths: God works behind the scenes in unexpected ways, He meets us in unexpected places, and He uses unexpected people to accomplish His purposes. The Christmas story reminds us that what we label as setbacks—like Israel's 700 years under foreign rule—might actually be divine setups for something greater. God orchestrated a Roman census through Caesar Augustus to fulfill a prophecy from Micah 5:2 that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem. The Savior wasn't born in a palace or temple, but in a cave, laid in an animal's feeding trough—demonstrating that God is willing to work where we are, not where we wish we were. The birth announcement wasn't given to religious elites, but to shepherds—people considered unclean and whose testimony wasn't even valid in court. These shepherds, likely tending sacrificial lambs, received news of the ultimate Lamb of God. This teaches us that God's grace isn't just for the 'who's who,' but for the 'whoever.' When we stop expecting God to work only in comfortable, predictable ways, we position ourselves to truly encounter Him in the midst of our messy, unexpected circumstances.
