Hebrews – A Call to Commitment: Essential Christian Qualities
Hebrews 13:1-6
Five Essential Qualities:
1. Family Love (Brotherly Love)
- Notice, Keep on: Don’t stop! Lit. let brotherly love continue
- Present tense/Continuous Action.
- Jesus gave us this command: John 13:34-35
- This is not mere sentiment: 1 John 3:16-18
- True love results in action.
2. Hospitality
- Inn’s were filthy, expensive and full of vice.
- Some are called to be missionaries.
- Where do they lodge?
- The house church: 3 John 5-8
- He thinks back to the book of Genesis: Gen. 18:2-3
- There are angels among us.
- Angels are ministering spirits: Heb 1:14
3. Empathy (put ourself in their shoes)
- Continue to do what you have done in the past.
- Brings us back to Acts 18:1-2
- Heb 10:32-34; Their response
- What we do to others; we do to Christ: Mt. 25:37-40
- When one suffers we all suffer: 1 Cor. 12:26
4. Purity
- God has a problem with sexual immorality. 1 Cor. 6:18-20
- God is a “Consuming fire.” Heb 12:29
5. Contentment
- This is critical to grasp for our consumer society.
- Money loving leads to division: Mt. 6:24
- Contentment comes from trusting God: Phil 4:11-13
- Don’t act like a pagan: Mt. 6:31-33
- Contentment comes from being confident in God’s promises.
- Our author goes to the well of scripture: Psalm 118:6-7
