Hebrews

● Audience: Written to Jewish Christians facing persecution and tempted to revert to Judaism.

● Purpose: To show the supremacy of Jesus Christ and encourage perseverance in faith.

● Key Question: How does Jesus fulfill and surpass the Old Testament system?

I. Jesus: The Better Revelation (Chapters 1-2)

● God's Final Word (1:1-3):

○ God spoke through prophets, but now through His Son.

○ Jesus is the exact representation of God's being.

● Superior to Angels (1:4-2:18):

○ Jesus is higher than angels, who are messengers and servants.

○ Jesus became human to identify with us and conquer death.

II. Jesus: The Better Priest (Chapters 3-7)

● Faithful Apostle and High Priest (3:1-6):

○ Jesus is faithful like Moses, but greater.

○ We are God’s house, if we hold firm our confidence.

● The Rest of God (3:7-4:13):

○ Warning against unbelief and disobedience that prevent entering God's rest.

○ The Sabbath rest points to the rest found in Christ.

● A Great High Priest (4:14-5:10):

○ Jesus understands our weaknesses because He was tempted.

○ Jesus is a priest after the order of Melchizedek, not Aaron.

● Maturity and the Word (5:11-6:20):

○ Encouragement to move beyond basic teachings to spiritual maturity.

○ Warning against falling away and losing salvation.

● The Melchizedek Priesthood (7:1-28):

○ Melchizedek’s priesthood is superior to the Levitical priesthood.

○ Jesus' priesthood is eternal and perfect.

III. Jesus: The Better Covenant (Chapters 8-10)

● A New Covenant (8:1-13):

○ The old covenant is obsolete and replaced by a new and better one.

○ This new covenant is established on better promises.

● A Superior Sanctuary (9:1-10):

○ The earthly tabernacle was a copy of the heavenly one.

○ Jesus entered the true sanctuary in heaven.

● A Perfect Sacrifice (9:11-10:18):

○ Animal sacrifices were imperfect and needed to be repeated.

○ Jesus' sacrifice was once for all, perfect and sufficient.

○ He has taken away our sins through his sacrifice.

IV. Living by Faith (Chapters 10:19-13)

● Draw Near to God (10:19-25):

○ We have confidence to enter God's presence through Jesus.

○ Encouragement to persevere in faith and fellowship.

● Warning Against Willful Sin (10:26-39):

○ Warning against rejecting the truth and returning to the old way.

○ The importance of enduring faith and not shrinking back.

● The Hall of Faith (Chapter 11):

○ Examples of faith from the Old Testament.

○ Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

● Discipline and Perseverance (12:1-17):

○ God disciplines those He loves.

○ Encouragement to run the race with perseverance.

● Kingdom of God (12:18-29):

○ Contrast between Mount Sinai and Mount Zion (heavenly Jerusalem).

○ The unshakeable kingdom of God.

● Final Exhortations (Chapter 13):

○ Brotherly love, hospitality, marriage, and contentment.

○ Obedience to leaders and remembrance of Jesus' sacrifice.
