Dan and Dave just got back from CSUN Accessibility Conference

  • “Everyone will have a disability at some point in their life”
  • Accessibility is just a branch of usability
  • The UN has a ratification to make all their technology accessible
    • Voice assistance and AI is on the rise making much more controllable via voice
    • Target had an inaccessible app and added someone to their team who was blind to work with them on the development of this app.
    • ARIA is somewhat of an override (last resort) way to change something that you can’t do in the code or HTML.
    • Using HTML5 tags the way they are intended to be used is a huge step in the right direction.
    • How do persons with disabilities use mobile devices?
    • What’s the future of accessibility policy in higher ed? In the USA?
    • The easiest way to get buy-in would be to just have a disabled person show how they work through a site or an app.
    • How to test:
      • VNDA tool to see how it works
      • Turn on voice controls on Mac
      • Just try to tab through a website without a mouse
