From “bunkbeds” to fearing if the person smiling at you was about to kill you, London provided a lot of “entertainment” for Helen in her 15 years there, but despite all that excitement she felt it was time to come back up North where she was originally from and get to know a community.
I was so used to London, where if someone talked to you on the bus, you thought they were going to kill you.
Living in Ramsbottom has provided not only fantastic views for Helen whilst she works from home, but also a real sense of community that I’ve heard many people say you just don’t get in a big city like London.
The interview was conducted in the Rose and Crown in Ramsbottom and Helen was even kind enough to buy me a pint, what a star, however I did wonder if I should continue when Helen accidentally spilled her pint down herself, so keep an ear out for when that happens (no prizes though).
Having conducted a number of interviews now for This is Rammy, I’ve noticed that there are regularly people who work from home or local creative people. I asked Helen why she thought that was:
I think creatives are drawn to community, and a sense of belonging. You really need somewhere that you want to go outside a bit.
Have a listen to the interview, and see if you feel the same as Helen, she really feels that Ramsbottom has changed for the better in the past 5 and a half years since she’s been living here.
Since moving from London Helen has launched the Northern Soul website
