Publisher's Summary:
Bennett described his story as an 'idyllic diversion'.
Helen Rathbone meets her elderly uncle, James Ollerenshaw, in Bursley Park, after an estrangement of several years. Both are very strong-willed, independent characters. Helen has an extravagant lifestyle and likes to spend money while the old man has lived a thrifty life and intends to continue in the same way. However, they develop a friendship which progresses rapidly, and Helen moves in to James' house to look after him.
A battle of wills begins in earnest. Both use all the cunning and emotional blackmail they can muster to get their own ways, and both experience a transformation as romance comes knocking at the door.
A wonderfully humorous and observant study of human nature and life in the Potteries at the turn of the century.
Members Reviews:
Humorous, sharply observed, delightful
This is the first Arnold Bennett novel I have read, and I must confess I had not heard of Bennett before. I found this little book on the shelf of an outdoor "free library," decided to give it a try, and subsequently discovered one of the most entertaining books I have read in a long time. This is a fun story, subtly tender but mainly humorous, that is as much about the characters as it is about the plot. What will happen when headstrong young Helen decides to move in her with long-lost old uncle? Read and find out for yourself in this short little novel that is worth your time.
This Book Makes You Laugh Out Loud
I have read several of Bennett's books & this is the most fun yet. I keep reading his books hoping to capture the pure joy of this one. It really is excellent.
Light, funny, quaint
If you read this book, you'll know why the Savoy in London serves a dish called Omelette Arnold Bennett. And although it's not one of his "important" novels, you'll also have read something light, amusing and quaint in a similar way to Grand Babylon Hotel.
Arnold Bennett is a wonderful writer who should be far better known
Arnold Bennett is a wonderful writer who should be far better known. Helen of the High Hand is short book about a battle wits between a strong minded young woman and her miserly old uncle. Its very entertaining.
An absolute gem of a book
This is a perfect little book; complete and magical. The warmth of Bennett's humanity glows from the pages. Innocent, funny and absolutely lovely.
