Helping Families Deal with Addiction

Listen Later

In this interview we discuss:
How Jeff went from meeting people in his office to providing help for them online.
Jeff noticed that in a typical intervention the interventionist helps with the intervention and then they are gone. And the family is left not really knowing what to do next and with little support and strength-based tools.
See spotlight diagram on Jeff’s website.
Jeff uses a rafting on the river model. He tries to give everyone involved the skills that they need for recovery and healthy living.
Several years ago Jeff created a three-phase program and then put it online and found things that he could do online that he wasn’t able to do face-to-face such as creating a healthy supportive community.
Secrets are huge in many families.
What he really tries to let people know is that this is not your shame comes from the culture the trauma comes from the culture and it trickles down.
The culture is designed for business it’s not really designed to help the addiction problem and the problem falls to families and they just do the best they can.
We talk about Brene Brown and the complicated process of how addicts and family members deal with shame. Family members tend to personalize the shame and identify with it.
Jeff provides his online tool and he also encourages collaboration with other professionals and helping people find the help they need.
It’s a program in which a family can work and heal together.
Jeffrey still has a small practice and sees people one and one at home.
As far as a Wi-Fi left-style is concerned Jeffrey is at the front end of the process. Right now Jeffrey has a foot in both worlds.
We talk about how stress is trauma too. Drugs and alcohol are used to take it away.
Part of Jeff’s "why" is the family secret's he grew up with and he is seeking to demystify that.
In the last several weeks Jeff’s program has helped someone transform their outlook and it is her family’s situation.
