1- Hava Nagila & Other Jewish Favorites.

Performed by, in succession: The Andrew Sisters; Pete Seeger; Jan Peerce; Al Jolson; Harry Belafonte; Cab Calloway and Betty Madigan. Hava Nagila is one of the first modern Jewish folk songs in the Hebrew language. It became a staple of band performances at Jewish weddings and religious celebrations. In Judaism, a nigun is a wordless melody line. Especially in the Hasidic tradition of Judaism, nigunim play a major role and are seen as a form of prayer.

                        2- Chava Alberstein.

On Lemele, Israeli singer Chava Alberstein sings in Yiddish again. The tone of most of her songs on Lemele (Lamb) is melancholic again, something that you quickly get when you sing in Yiddish, according to Chava: “It is the language of our grandparents. You talk to people who are no longer alive and that makes you sad”. The recent revival of klezmer has increased interest in Yiddish again and in Chava Alberstein the language has an excellent ambassador. The singer recorded Lemele in Prague with a Czech orchestra. The voice of Chava Alberstein (herself born in Poland) and the music of the orchestra complement each other perfectly.

3- Trio C Tot De Derde.

The trio consists of accordionist Coos Lettink, violinist Carel den Hertog and clarinetist Caspar Terra. Lettink and Terra have known each other since the third grade of primary school and started improvising music together around that time. With the addition of Den Hertog’s virtuoso violin, a real trio was created with the humorous name Trio C Tot De Derde. The conservatory students often use traditional Klezmer, Balkan or gypsy music as a basis for many improvisations, which gives the music a life of its own. Like ‘true gypsies’ they play everywhere and also on the street. Furthermore, the music of Trio C Tot De Derde is exuberant, humorous, melancholic and virtuoso.

The Erevan Ensemble, a quintet of clarinet, goblet drum, bouzouki, electric guitar, and oud lute, illustrates a view of the transnational dynamics that have played such a significant role in the history of music over the past hundred years. Here we have a group of men, several of whom are simultaneously church deacons, music teachers, and ex-rockers—that is, general pillars of the community—raised in Michigan as third-generation descendants of immigrants from Western Armenia. Their music, in the kef (party) style, now represents an Armenian-American tradition characteristic mainly of the early twentieth century and now seemingly under threat from new, synthesizer-driven dance groups.

He recorded the song La Bohème in 1965 and, according to himself, it is about a painter who remembers his young life. His artistic years in which he was hungry, but happy. He was born in Paris in 1924 as Shahnour Varenagh Aznavourian, a son of Armenian immigrants. At a young age he entered the world of film, theatre and nightclubs, where he soon gained some recognition as a songwriter. Maurice Chevalier and Edith Piaf sang his works and encouraged the young man to start singing himself. The tide only turned in the late fifties. He then appeared in films and on stage alongside Frank Sinatra, among others. Charles died in 2018.

One of the founders of the levenslied was born in Rotterdam in 1883. Louis Davids grew up in a Jewish fairground family and was brought up with a love of singing. In 1909, Louis Davids left for a tour to England where he got ideas for his revue shows in the Netherlands. He translated English songs into Dutch and achieved success with them. With his songs De kleine man (The little man) and Als je voor een dubbeltje geboren bent (If you were born for a dime), Louis expressed the sense of crisis of the Dutch in the thirties. Louis Davids died in 1939, a few months before the Second World War broke out.

Since 1958, he organized the Loosdrecht Jazz Concours annually. He opened a gramophone record store in Utrecht on the Amsterdamsestraatweg and in 1974 a store in the Hoog Catharijne shopping center. However, in the eighties, Max was forced to close his stores. In 1991, he died from Parkinson’s.

Compay Segundo (1907) shone on the album Buena by Buena Vista Social Club. His solo album Calle Salud was recorded in early 1999 in studios in Havana, Paris and Malaga. On this album he sings old compositions by Francisco Repilado, Carlos Gardél, Enrique Jorrin and Miguel Matamoros. The dance styles on Calle Salud are son (an old Cuban dance in which salsa originated), bolero, cha cha cha and merengue. The music therefore does not differ much from that of Buena Vista Social Club. The collaboration of Charles Aznavour is striking, who sings a translation of Mourir D’Aimer with Compay Segundo.

Carel Kraayenhof, With his bandoneon he roams the world and likes to mingle with people. Carel listened to stories from the past and present. African refugees trying to reach Lampedusa. Tula, the Spartacus of Curaçao who, with a thousand slaves, let a cry for freedom be heard. Young musicians in Jujuy (Northern Argentina) without a bandoneon, who play cardboard boxes out of necessity. A tribute to the Jewish writer Ida Vos who wrote the book 32 Tranen, 32 poems for the children of her school class who did not return after the war. These stories inspired Carel Kraayenhof to write new compositions and that is how he came up with the idea for a new theatre show, in which the Argentine Tango and the Cuban Son/Danzón play a role.

This is the first Dhol Foundation studio album by Johnny Kalsi and his students from the Dhol Foundation institute in London. The Dhol drum is a traditional percussion instrument from the Punjab province in northern India, where Johnny Kalsi comes from. In London he experimented with dance beats and electronic music, which he mixes with the traditional bhangra style in his albums.
Their music has been heard in Hollywood films such as Gangs of New York and The Incredible Hulk, and they have collaborated with Peter Gabriel on the soundtrack of the film Rabbit-Proof Fence.

With Sacred Thread saxophonist Charles Lloyd concludes his Trio Of Trios: three albums with three different trios led by him. The contribution of the Indian tabla player and singer Zakir Hussain is particularly valuable in this respect. For example, the song Kuti is based on a composition by Hussain. Lloyd knows his way around the atmosphere and form of Indian classical music very well and approaches the sound of a bansuri with his transverse flute solo. The third and youngest member of the trio, guitarist Julian Lage, once again proves himself to be an all-rounder. With a tasteful combination of virtuosity and sensitivity he supports Lloyd and Hussain.
