At the end of the 19th C. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec made dynamic and empathetic portrayals of Parisian circus acts, including bareback riders, acrobats, and clowns, often sketching them from memory using crayon and pastel while undergoing treatment for alcoholism in a sanitarium.
