People always say "No parent should outlive their child," but that's a little like saying "No good man should ever get sick and die before 75." In the sense that it's very undesirable of course it's correct, but in the sense that it's in some way unnatural is not. Most parents to have ever lived lost a child.

On the topic of addiction: People who are so desperate to remove moral responsibility from others also remove their agency, their potency, their humanity.
