Henry Selick is perhaps the foremost director in the world of stop-motion animation, and he's held a special place in my heart ever since he directed one of my personal most influential and beloved films in history, "The Nightmare Before Christmas" (which he directed for Tim Burton, who conceived and produced it). He also created the adaptations of "James and the Giant Peach" and "Coraline," both of which were featured in a special double feature organized by Cinema Kanada who invited me to take part in the event. The man is a big deal and has been an inspiration to me as an artist and animator for years.

It was an immense pleasure to ask questions that genuinely intrigued me and receive long, detailed answers that took on lives of their own, becoming short and enchanting stories about the aunt who used to gather all the children during summer vacation and tell scary stories about witches who had their skin suits filled with hot pepper. Henry loves to talk and he's good at it. He's incredibly generous with his knowledge and experience, and refreshingly honest in his opinions. He is is an artist who understands his medium, loves the material he chooses to work with, and approaches his craft with intention and deep appreciation for the art.

And I had the privilege of speaking with him for a whole hour.

זה היה תענוג ענק לשאול שאלות שאשכרה סיקרנו אותי ולקבל תשובות ארוכות ומפורטות שתפסו כיוונים משל עצמם והפכו לסיפורים קצרים ומלאי קסם על הדודה שהייתה אוספת את כל הילדים בחופשת הקיץ ומספרת סיפורים מפחידים על מכשפות שממלאים להן את חליפת העור שלהן בפילפל חריף. הנרי אוהב לדבר והוא גם טוב בזה, סופר נדיב עם הידע והניסיון שלו, וגם כנה בדעותיו בקטע מרענן. הנרי סליק הוא אמן שמבין את המדיום שלו, אוהב את החומר שהוא בוחר לעבוד איתו, ופועל בכוונה והערכה מלאה לאמנות.
