In this week in British History, presented by Philippa Lacey Brewell of British history Tours, this week covers the death of Henry VII at Richmond Palace and the subsequent ascension to the throne of his son Henry VIII. Philippa covers why Henry VIII's reign promised so much in contrast to that of his fathers and why Henry VII is dubbed 'The Winter King'. In this week the parliament which met to declare that Charles II had been king since the execution of his father, effectively ignoring that the commonwealth had existed. In the same week a year on, Charles II had his coronation at Westminster Abbey. The birth date of William Shakespeare can not be determined for definite but he as christened on 26th April (1564) and died on the 23rd April (1616) which leads to a tempting surmise that he could have died on his birthday as children were baptised on the nearest Holy Day or Sunday following their birth.
