Anatomical variations in the hepatobiliary system are a major root cause of vasculobiliary injury during cholecystectomy and other surgical procedures. Because these variations occur in roughly one-third to one-half of all patients, they frequently lead to the misidentification of ducts and vessels, which can result in catastrophic complications like bile duct division or hepatic ischemia.
