The hepatorenal recess (“Morison’s pouch”) is a potential space between the liver and right kidney. With small volumes of intraabdominal blood (hemoperitoneum), ascites, or even peritoneal dialysis, fluid accumulates in this recess which shows up as a near-black stripe on ultrasound.
