Για την επιστήμη της ανθρωπολογίας ήταν δεδομένο ότι οι άντρες κυνηγούσαν στις προϊστορικές κοινότητες, ενώ οι γυναίκες ήταν συλλέκτριες. Η θεωρία του άντρα ως κυνηγός θεωρήθηκε ως ο κύριος λόγος της εξέλιξης του ανθρώπου και βασιζόταν στον διαχωρισμό της εργασίας εξαιτίας των βιολογικών διαφορών μεταξύ ανδρών και γυναικών.
