Desperate for answers, Meredith seeks the help of a psychiatrist. Through therapy Meredith peels back the layers of her life to discover the truth behind her most careful creation - herself. Determined to get well, Meredith traces her roots back to another country where she learns about childhood experiences that dramatically changed her life. What she discovers is not only reveals the past, but it is also the key to her future happiness. Moving from the Connecticut countryside, the busy streets and suites of London, Paris and New York, to the pastoral beauty of a château in the Loire, Her Own Rules is an exciting and suspenseful novel about secrets, survival, redemption and love.
Members Reviews:
a little light compared to other BTB novels
This book started out slow. I found that I didn't have the desire to hurry back to it or to read late into the night. The characters didn't live in my head and I didn't find myself in their living rooms. I had it figured out in no time at all. Would have enjoyed more elaboration on early life of Mari and mom, more of life in the orphanage, what Mari did to stop this practice. I missed the elaborate description of furniture and clothes. When I finished, I did not know the characters.
A great strong Woman book
I have read and reread Barbar Taylor Bradford's books. She always has strong female characters and they rise above whatever comes their way and always in interesting unexpected ways.
A different kind of mystery
Barbara Taylor Bradford is one of my favorite authors. This novel reinforces this view. Meredith Stratton was a successful mother and business woman, but inside she was a sad woman who kept the details of her childhood a closely guarded secret. In fact, she herself remembered only part of it. She had grown up in Australia, at first in an orphanage and later with her loveless, detached adopted parents. As an adult, she goes to England on business and finds herself near the remnants old an old Abbey. There she is inexplicably drawn to the ruins with an overwhelming sense that she had been there before. That plus a recurring dream from her childhood begins her search for her past.
I found myself caught up in her search. The characters were likeable people I'd love to meet.
The plot kept me interested. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel.
Another winner by a world class writer
Her Own Rules is a heart rending story of a child separated from her mother and growing up a world away from her..
Barbara Taylor Bradford writes a compelling story about the separation, the life of and the reunion of the daughter with her mother
This book will keep the reader enthralled from the first to the last page.
Another Barbara Taylor Bradford winner
Flat, tedious, and predictable
The book starts off with a broken romance and a furious ex. Great opportunity for conflict, right? Nope. He just storms out - right out of the book. The rest could have been a good short story, although still very predictable. But it just dragged to the end - a sappy reunion that you knew was coming. I used to love Ms. Bradford's books.
