The United States is in deep negotiations with the Taliban over an orderly and peaceful withdrawal of American and other international military forces from Afghanistan. In Washington, in addition to escape, the Taliban negotiation offers a chance to pave the way to an end to civil war.  In Kabul, it’s seen as a sellout of America’s friends, and the once-shared ambition of a democratic, modern Afghanistan.
