Read Genesis 45:1-3

Themes for Genesis 45:1-3

  1. I’vsh stood all I can stand and I can’t stands no more (Joseph)

    1. Unable to control himself- unlike before when he could

    2. kicked everyone out

    3. He wept aloud (raise the voice, expression, he, weeping - 4 Hebrew words)

    4. Revealed Himself (asked about his father) - Does he think they were telling a story

    5. Brother’s Response (again as a group)

      1. Unable to answer

      2. Dismayed (shocked, scared) at his appearance

      3. Read Genesis 45:4-8

        Themes for Genesis 45:4-8

        1. Joseph comforting his brothers

          1. You Sold me into Egypt

          2. Do not be distressed or angry with yourselves

          3. Questions:

            Does this really relieve them of the responsibility?

            Is this forgiveness by Joseph?

            What do we think of his previous actions now?

            1. Reviewing the intensity of the famine

              1. 5 years left

              2. Neither Plowing nor harvest

              3. God Sent Me Before You …

                1. Responsibility is God’s (part of the overall plan or in spite of)

                  1. to preserve life

                  2. to preserve a remnant for you on earth

                  3. to keep alive for you many survivors

                  4. God Has Made Me (look at the absolutes)

                    1. A father to Pharaoh

                    2. Lord of all his house

                    3. ruler over all the land of Egypt

                    4. Read Genesis 45:9-11

                      Themes for Genesis 45:9-11

                      1. Hurry up and go tell my Dad

                        1. God installed me as Lord over all of Egypt (walk in it)

                        2. Come quickly

                        3. I’ve got a place already picked out for you

                        4. Not just you but you children and grandchildren

                        5. All your possessions

                        6. This will allow you to be close to me

                        7. This will allow me to provide for you (sustain you with food)

                        8. There are 5 years of the famine left

                          1. If you do this the you will not come to poverty (be impoverished)

                          2. Read Genesis 45:12-15

                            Themes for Genesis 49:12-15

                            1. It is me Joseph

                              1. You see, my brother benjamin sees

                              2. You see that I am speaking in our language

                              3. You see my reputation and importance in Egypt

                              4. You must tell my father of all you have seen

                              5. Finally embraces his brothers

                                1. First time he has been that close (maybe that is what the dinner table was about)

                                2. Then they talk, 

                                3. Read Genesis 45:16-20

                                  Themes for Genesis 45:16-20

                                  1. The Pharaoh heard the report (who keeps telling people stuff?)

                                    1. Joseph’s brothers have come (they are in Egypt, he has brothers)

                                    2. It pleased Pharaoh and his servants

                                    3. Pharaoh gives orders to Joseph (the only one that could command Joseph)

                                      1. There are 7 commands in verses 17-19

                                      2. Joseph to his brothers

                                        1. Do This, Load your beasts

                                        2. Go Back to Canaan

                                        3. Take your father

                                        4. Come back

                                        5. Eat the fat of the land

                                        6. Pharaoh commanded Joseph

                                          1. Take wagons from Egypt

                                          2. Pharaoh’s promise to give the best land in Egypt

                                          3. Pharaoh is waying to bring all the family back with them (wives and little one and household)

                                          4. Let not your eye pity (have no concern) for your goods (equipment) - anything you leave behind

                                          5. You have the best land in Egypt to settle in

                                          6. Read Genesis 45:21-24

                                            Themes for Genesis 45:21-24

                                            1. Did as commanded - Sons of Israel (including Joseph)

                                            2. Joseph (being Joseph) make sure all was thought through

                                              1. Gave the brothers provisions for the journey

                                              2. Gave a change of Clothes (necessity or nah?)

                                              3. Benjamin racked up

                                                1. 5 changes of clothes

                                                2. 300 shekels of silver = 120 ozs or 3448.80 (20 shekels for Joseph when sold)

                                                3. Question: Why? Test is over right, because of love, favor, Joseph must not be expecting any blowback

                                                  Question: What does this look like today? Are there any  parallels? Are we too jealous in today’s time, FOMO, Worried about other people’s pockets?

                                                  1. To Israel Joseph sent

                                                    1. 10 donkeys loaded with good things of Egypt

                                                    2. 10 female donkeys with grain, bread and provision for the return trip

                                                    3. Sent the brother on their way and told them not to quarrel (shake anything up, get excited)

                                                    4. Read Genesis 45:25-28

                                                      Themes for Genesis 45:25-28

                                                      1. The brother make the trip (including Simeon)

                                                      2. They collectively tell their father 

                                                        1. Joseph is still alive

                                                        2. He is ruler over all of Egypt

                                                        3. Jacob’s First Response

                                                          1. Did not trust what they were saying (believe them)

                                                          2. His heart became numb (turned cold metaphorically)

                                                          3. More information for Jacob

                                                            1. All the words of Joseph

                                                            2. He saw the wagons that Joseph had sent

                                                            3. Jacob’s Second Response

                                                              1. Jacob’s spirit is revived

                                                              2. It is enough (I have seen and heard enough)

                                                              3. Let’s roll (recognition of his old age)
