This episode explores the testing effect, also called retrieval practice: trying to produce information from memory after you have studied it. Beth and Maggie explain why low-stakes retrieval is different from high-stakes testing, how it can strengthen longer-term retention, and why rereading and rewriting notes can create an illusion of fluency.

Beth Callaghan, Ph.D. is President & COO of College Onramps. She holds a PhD in English, taught at USC, and was a founding curriculum designer at Minerva University.
