The Australian federal government has committed $660 million to a two-year development phase for a high-speed rail link between Newcastle and Sydney. The $55 billion project promises to reduce travel time from two and a half hours to just one hour, with Newcastle an hour from Sydney and the Central Coast half an hour away. The line would require 115 kilometres of tunnels and could unlock capacity for 160,000 new homes and thousands of jobs, with a final decision on whether to proceed expected in 2028.
