Listener question from J. J. Cronin
I'm interested to hear everyone's thoughts about this issue of competitive play and personal adversity. I know some players who are chomping at the bit to play in the next "big" event (PPTQ, Open, RPTQ, etc.) regardless of how they did and some who get discouraged after consistently poor performances at FNM's or PPTQ's where they take a step back from competitive Magic or the game altogether.  I don't think I've ever played a "tier 1" deck in standard yet have relied on slightly above average skill to usually go above .500 but never top 8. I try to play FNM every week, but sometimes it's every other week. I probably average between one to three standard leagues on MTGO a week. I often wonder if more testing/playing and also playing a tried and tested tier 1 deck is the reason I can't seem to get over the hump and top 8 my first PPTQ. I sort of have a maybe unrealistic goal of having the same habits but expecting different results in terms of spiking a PPTQ and eventually getting to the RPTQ or PT level. I'm debating taking a step back from non-FNM magic until the release of Kaladesh.  What are your thoughts and keys to success? How often do you take a look at your play beyond the sequences of games?
What are we up to this weekend?
