Melanin is responsible for determining hair color, eye color, and it is present in the skin to varying degrees, depending on how much a population has been exposed to the sun. This would the scientific definition.

However, I would define Melanin as Powerful, Unique, Strong, Prideful, Special, Beautiful, Rich, Intelligent, Confident and Humble at the same time, Assertive, and Subtle, Sensitive, and at times Aggressive, Talented, and Gifted, Wise, and Nurturing. Melanin is my people, my culture, my passion, my spirit, and my peace.
