A good read but not one of Siddons' best
A good read but not one of Siddons' best. I do love her writing but there seemed to be a few gaps in the story with the characters moving in directions that didn't seem logical to me. But I did love the descriptions of the scenery and the story kept me reading. Certainly not a book that I'd abandon or just not finish, but there are many other Siddons books that I love much more.
Moving and Informative
Very informative and provocative reading. The characters really got under my skin and I saw so much of myself and my husband in how we act toward each other. I am an painter and I really connected to the artist. I am sorry I finished it last night I want more of the journey though their lives as they all explore Italy. You could see and smell your way though the hills and the old parts the country. Very visual writer. It was like watching the words come to life before my eyes and I was there on this trip to Hill Towns.
Disappointing!
Always loved this author but what a disappointment this book was ! I could care less about the characters and could not relate to any of them nor did I want to. Empty headed, self-centered people wandering around aimlessly from town/city on to the next place. I kept hoping something interesting would develop but never happened. This is a good book to read on an airplane if you have nothing better to read or do(Suduko?) I hope this is not an indication of what we can expect from Ms. Siddons in the future.I The only redeeming factor was a trip back in time to some of these places in Italy that we have visited and loved.
you will love the description of the town and the university although ...
If you are familiar with the University of the South on Monteagle Mountain, you will love the description of the town and the university although the names have been change, somewhat anyway. I loved traveling through Italy again. Frankly, I keep thinking that the artist Sam is based on Pat Conroy who lived in Rome for a stretch and was a good friend of Anne Rivers Siddons.
so if you like a lot of description especially of Italy
Have read most of her books, and I felt the story line in this book was a bit weak with too much description for my liking.
Everyone has different taste, so if you like a lot of description especially of Italy, this book is for you.
